Articles and Research

Here are questions and summaries of valuable research. The research information is provided so you can look it up and read more details.

Why does the research say one thing one day, and the next day it says something else?
Reasons for Research by Mary McGaa, DC

Groups have various reasons for conducting research.

While many of us feel the reasons should be in our best interest, they sometimes are not. Healthcare research ideally should be objective and be used to promote our health and well-being.

Research is based on proving or disproving hypotheses, or ideas.

For example, someone has an idea that a certain procedure or product will alleviate a certain health concern. They, then, conduct experiments to test their hypothesis. If the procedure or product does what the researcher expected, he or she reports that the hypothesis appears to be true, and then the product or procedure is often approved and used.

Hypotheses, or ideas, must be challenged to protect us from bad research or impure motives.

The researcher’s idea, or hypothesis, is not a theory. It appeared to be true with the experiments he or she conducted. Keep in mind, we may not know the researcher’s motives, and it is up to us to decide if they are in our best interests or not.

Additional research on the same topics can protect us or harm us, depending upon the motives.

New research often reveals unknown facts that make an impact on earlier research findings. Sometimes, other researchers do not agree with the hypothesis, or the hypothesis may clash with a procedure or product they are trying to promote. So, they design their own experiments to disprove the first researcher’s study. Still, it is our responsibility to examine the research and the facts.
